How to Pack a Kübox

The basic principle: cushion, center, restrain, and protect. The item should not rest directly against the walls of the Kübox and should not be able to shift freely inside the container during transportation.

This guide provides general packing practices for Kübox shipments. The correct packing method depends on the item's weight, dimensions, fragility, value, shape, and transportation environment.

Think of the Kübox and Cushioning as One Packaging System

A strong outer container does not eliminate the need for proper internal protection. The Kübox helps resist external compression, impact, puncture, and handling forces. Cushioning and restraint help prevent those forces from being transferred directly to the item.

1. Inspect and Assemble the Kübox

Before placing anything inside the container, inspect the Kübox and confirm that it is suitable for use.

  • Check the corrugated panels for significant damage or moisture exposure.
  • Inspect cornerboards and structural components.
  • Confirm hubs, locking pins, and fasteners are present and functioning.
  • Replace damaged components before reuse.
  • Make sure the bottom is fully assembled and secure.

2. Protect the Bottom of the Shipment

Do not place fragile or damage-sensitive items directly against the bottom of the container.

Create a cushioning layer before loading the item. For many fragile applications, Kübox recommends approximately 2 inches of large-cell bubble cushioning or other suitable protective material, adjusted as necessary for the item's weight, fragility, and shape.

Heavier or highly fragile items may require engineered foam, blocking, bracing, additional cushioning, or another specialized packing method. There is no single cushioning material appropriate for every shipment.

3. Cushion the Item

Wrap and protect the item before placing it inside the Kübox. Pay particular attention to corners, edges, projections, screens, glass, controls, and other vulnerable areas.

For General Fragile Items

  • Use suitable shock-absorbing cushioning.
  • Protect corners and exposed edges.
  • Cover surfaces that may scratch or abrade.
  • Protect protruding components separately.

For Electronics and Equipment

  • Protect screens and displays.
  • Remove or secure loose accessories.
  • Protect switches, connectors, and controls.
  • Use appropriate anti-static materials when required.

4. Center the Item

Whenever practical, position the item toward the center of the Kübox rather than allowing it to rest against an exterior wall.

The objective is to create a protective zone around the item so that external forces must travel through the container structure and cushioning before reaching the contents.

Do not rely on the Kübox wall itself as cushioning. A strong outer container and adequate internal cushioning perform different jobs.

5. Prevent Movement

Once packed, the item should not be able to move freely inside the Kübox. Movement allows the contents to develop momentum before striking another object or the container wall.

Fill usable void areas with appropriate cushioning or restraint materials without over-compressing fragile contents.

  • Check movement from side to side.
  • Check movement from front to back.
  • Prevent excessive vertical movement.
  • Secure separate components so they cannot collide.
  • Keep dense or heavy objects from migrating through softer cushioning.

Do Not Substitute Convenience Materials for Proper Cushioning

Materials that happen to be available are not necessarily suitable protective packaging.

Avoid Paper as Primary Cushioning for Fragile Heavy Items

Crumpled paper can compress and lose protective thickness under heavier loads. It may be useful for certain light-duty applications but should not be assumed to provide adequate cushioning for fragile, dense, or heavy goods.

Do Not Rely on Clothing or Linens

Clothing, towels, blankets, and similar personal items are inconsistent cushioning materials. They compress unpredictably and make it difficult to create a repeatable packing standard.

Packing Multiple Items in One Kübox

When several items are packed together, each item should be individually protected and prevented from striking the other contents.

  • Wrap fragile items individually.
  • Separate hard or dense objects from fragile objects.
  • Place heavier items lower in the container when practical.
  • Do not allow metal, glass, tools, or equipment to make direct contact.
  • Use dividers, cushioning, blocking, or other restraint where appropriate.

A well-packed container behaves as a single controlled shipping unit rather than a collection of loose objects inside a strong box.

6. Cushion the Top and Close the Kübox

Before installing the top, provide appropriate cushioning above the contents and confirm that no fragile item will be directly compressed by the lid.

Install the top and complete the Kübox assembly according to the assembly instructions. Confirm that all locking components and fasteners are properly seated.

Do not force the container closed over contents that are too large. If the top cannot be installed normally, use a larger Kübox or revise the packing configuration.

7. Perform a Final Movement and Condition Check

Before shipping, inspect the complete package.

  • Confirm the Kübox is fully assembled.
  • Confirm all structural components are secure.
  • Check that the contents do not move freely.
  • Confirm the container is not bulging or distorted.
  • Verify the shipping label is securely attached and clearly visible.
  • Remove or cover obsolete labels from previous shipments.
If you can clearly hear or feel a fragile item moving freely inside the container, reopen the Kübox and correct the packing before shipment.

Document High-Value and Critical Shipments

For valuable, fragile, commercial, or mission-critical shipments, photograph the packing process before closing the Kübox.

Useful photographs include:

  • The condition of the item before packing.
  • The bottom cushioning layer.
  • The wrapped or protected item.
  • The item's position inside the Kübox.
  • Side and top cushioning.
  • The completed open container before closure.
  • The final closed and labeled Kübox.
